' The largest concourse of people that has ever assembled in Greensboro on a funeral occasion met yefterday aftcrnoon at a 130 o'clock at the Bap tist church to witness the lsst sad rites over the remains . ot the Jate Judge Thomas Settle. The funeral cortege left the late residenceof the deceased at 2 : 15 and arrived at the church at 2 :3d iu the following order i ' Carriage- containing officiating clergymen ; Members of Bar en foot. Hearse containing casket, accom panied by the following members of the Bar, who acted aa pall bearers 1 Col. fas. T. Morvhead, Messrs. John A. Barringer, W. S. Hill, R. R. King, Jos. M. Morehead, Jas. W. Forbis,L.-A. Bailey, John N. Wil son, C. G. Wright and John S. Michaux. , ! Carriages containing memhers of family and relatives ; carriages con taining citizens. , v On arriving at the church and as the remains were being borne down the aisle, Prot. Sullivan, of G. F. College, who presided at the organ, played Chopin's Funeral March. The opening praysr was offered by Rev. W. R. Gwaltney. Rev. E. W. Smith, whp conducted the ser vices, gave out the hymn, "Rock of Ages," which was sung by the choir, composed of Miss Hackelton, Miss Alice Jones and Messrs. 0. H. Ireland and A; G. Robinson, , in a touching manner, after which Rev; Dr. Smith read the burial service, and Rev. E. W. Smith offered prayer. Miss Hackelton then sang as a solo, 'Oh ! for the wings of a dove," from' Men delssohn's "Hear My PAyerl", ; Rev. E. W. Smith madeome very appropriate and feeling remarks on I the life and character of the deceased and rad well-prepared sketch of his career, the data ot which he1 an nounced had been furnished him , by one of Judge Settle's most intimate personal friends.. , f 1 - ''Although only. 59 years of agej Judge Settle had filled many posi tieas of trust, and all ' of them ha filled with honor to himself and with credit to his country, He bad been member and Speaker of the Senate ot North Carolina, aq officer in , the Confederate; army, Solicitor of the 7th Judicial District, an associate Jus tice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina, and was up to the time of his death District Judge of the U. S. Court for the Northern District of Florida. He was the foremcst man of his party in the South, and it was expected that he would be called to a position in Mr. HarrisWs cabinet. At the close of Rev. E. W. Smith's address the choir sang, "Asleep in Jesus, and then the procession took up the line of march to Greene Hill Cemetery, where the concluding ser vices were conducted by Bev. W. R.
